Those who crossed his path, saw of him only what he wanted them
to see. He played hard at the game of life, living with a passion
for that game and he won. Percy knew the earth turned, but not
from any lessons taught him as a child. He knew the earth turned
when a breeze would touch his face. He knew the earth turned when
a sail would billow and a ship would tack hard against the wind
and into the night. He knew the earth turned and he calibrated
his life to that movement and measured it by his tracking of the
stars in the night sky. He also believed that it was no accident
that put him to his place and to his trials. He believed in the
fates and challenged them at every turn. He was a survivor.
Mr. Perceval Jefferson Hays was born to a free woman in New Orleans, Louisiana, sometime in the month of May in either 1875 or 1876. He died a free man in Baltimore, Maryland on April 14, 1954 during the cold war.
He was loved.
